A review of the evidence for pain perception strongly. Most people today consider that their moral obligations extend to many animal species. The review reveals that fish perception and cognitive abilities often match or exceed other vertebrates. Fish possess a suite of adaptive behavioural and physiological responses that have evolved to cope with stressors. Despite a growing body of sound evidence that fish do indeed feel pain and are sentient beings capable of all the types of cognition found in the higher mammals, with the possible sole exception of the ability to imitate, a group of critics seems to systematically seek to discredit this research. Sentient animals include fish and other vertebrates, as well as some molluscs and decapod crustaceans. ![]() Responses of fish, of some species and under certain situations, suggest that they are able to experience fear. Zebrafish normally prefer a water temperature of around 28 degrees C, but after experiencing stress as a result of being netted and restrained, the fish consistently spent more time - up to eight hours - in warmer water. Defence and escape behaviours are dependent on cognitive and learning abilities related to fear. Tragically, the ignorance largely continues in regard to fish. ![]() Thankfully, that fallacy is now rejected nearly universally in regard to mammalian and avian species. However, when given access to a tank containing a range of water temperatures which they could freely move between, stressed zebrafish consistently moved to a warmer area than their relaxed counterparts, increasing their body temperature to between two and four degrees C above that of unstressed fish, effectively demonstrating an emotional fever state. Fish Sentience Recognition by the Scientific Community For centuries, a common belief has been the Cartesian claim that nonhuman animal species were incapable of suffering pain. Intensive shrimp farming is growing exponentially. The fact that fish and amphibians apparently did not exhibit emotional fever was taken as evidence that they lacked even basic sentience. Crabs, shrimps, lobsters and crayfishes are targeted by massive fishing operations. People who eat fish, or meat, should be aware they are ‘causing the death of an animal. Based on earlier tests involving goldfish and toads, it was previously thought that only amniotes - vertebrates that lay eggs on land or retain the fertilised egg within the mother - could experience emotional fever states. Fish are sentient animals who form friendships and experience 'positive emotions', landmark study suggests. 2001, Berlin: Dahlem University Press, The Evolution of Morality and Religion (2003, Cambridge University Press), Sentience and Animal Welfare, 2014 CABI, Domestic Animal Behaviour and Welfare, 5th edition, (Broom and Fraser 2015, CABI) and Tourism and Animal Welfare (Carr and Broom 2018, CABI).Emotional fever states are regarded to be a hallmark of sentience and consciousness, indicating the a create has an emotional response to potentially threatening situations. Amongst his twelve books are Stress and Animal Welfare (Broom and Johnson 1993, Springer), Coping with Challenge : Welfare in Animals including Humans (Broom ed. group on Welfare of Animals during Land Transport. He has been Chairman or Vice Chairman of EU Scientific Committees on Animal Welfare 1990 – 2009 and a member of the EFSA Panel on Animal Health and Welfare until June 2012. He has published over 360 refereed papers, lectured on animal welfare in 45 countries and served on UK (FAWC and APC) and Council of Europe committees. Fish are in many ways as intelligent as land animals, but this was not widely understood in the scientific community until recently. In his Centre for Animal Welfare and Anthrozoology, he has developed concepts and methods of scientific assessment of animal welfare and studied: cognitive abilities of animals, the welfare of farmed and other animals in relation to housing and transport, behaviour problems of pets, sustainable livestock production, attitudes to animals and ethics of animal usage. In philosophy, different authors draw different distinctions between consciousness and sentience. Compassion in World Farming is working to raise awareness about fish sentience and the welfare problems that aquaculture industry represents for fish.
